T oday’s residence halls are inhabited by one of the most dynamic generations to enter Academe. Students today are “wired,” civic minded, ambitious, and, despite their sense of power and of entitlement, they are more dependent on authority figures than their predecessors were. Knowing this, how does a student in today’s institution of higher education perceive of and live within an accountability system, and how do their attitudes and actions shape their role within that system? How do institutions establish effective accountability systems, ones that work not because they are threatening or punitive but because they make sense? Most students feel that some kind of accountability is necessary within a campus community, whether it be a firm set of rules or the common understanding of a code of conduct. The rules or the code may seem somewhat basic and may simply mirror codes of law applicable to everyone, but some overriding sense of right and wrong is still necessary. As one student expresses it, common sense alone isn’t always sufficient to act as a reliable guide for behavior, since often “common sense is uncommon.” A code of conduct can protect students, especially in cases where, as one resident assistant expressed it, “they won’t protect themselves.” Some RAs even agreed that, on rare occasions, the university “knows best.” Community values Developmental and educational approaches to student accountability tend to be more effective than an adversarial or retributive approach, according to Alesia Smith, director of the office of community and ethical standards at Clemson University in South Carolina, who feels that a “punitive approach never works very well.” Educational approaches are modeled on the concept of restorative justice, which places more emphasis on the offender accepting responsibility and making reparations than it does on retribution or punishment. Walter Turner, director of student community ethics at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina, explains that a hearing officer practicing restorative justice will consider all those affected by a student’s transgression – the on your honor by Wade Livingston and Lance Watson 0 Talking STick
