What’s the first thing you do when you get into the office each morning? Open the office blinds, turn on the computer, and attack e-mail. What’s the biggest issue for the students on your campus right now? Affording college while balancing mounting debt and loans. Personal safety and not becoming victim to crime is a close second. What’s the biggest issue you see facing the profession right now? Applying solid and good thinking skills to practical problems of students in an ever changing environment, skills that demonstrate accountability in measurable and observable terms. What makes your campus unique? Our unique and continuing history with civil rights and social justice. What resource can’t you live without? The Internet. What made you decide to work in housing? If you hadn’t chosen housing, what would your job be? I loved my RA and grad experiences in Carbondale, Illinois. I would probably be applying my trade elsewhere in the educational arena if it was not for housing and residence life. When was the last time you awoke to a phone call from work in the middle of the night? Quite a while now. What do you wish was different about your job? More time for reflection of purpose. New social technology like texting and Facebook: Good or evil? Definitely good! What’s your biggest challenge on campus? Ensuring constant and solid communication among students, parents, administration, and other stakeholders with regard to various processes. Best speaker/book you’ve been impressed by? Speaker: Dr. Cornel West. The brother is DEEP! Book: Thomas Friedman’s The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century. Last meal at a campus dining hall? Fried fish, salad, and lemonade. Name the individuals who made the greatest impact on your career. Dr. Lee June, vice president of student affairs and services, Michigan State University, and Ms. Virginia Benning Rinella, director, pre-major advisement, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Favorite campus traditions? Our annual homecoming tradition and celebration is something to behold here in Greensboro. Every year, millions of dollars are pumped into the local economy as Aggies, far and wide, along with our community, celebrate Aggieland! leonarD Jones is the Executive Director of Housing and Residence Life at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina.
