A student and her family get directions to her residence hall on move-in day. Many schools are reevaluating how to train the individuals who work closest with students, particularly residence life staff. The survey concluded that 58 percent of counseling center directors were working on increasing staff training in how to handle difficult mental health cases. Eric Grospitch, director of residential life at the University of Missouri in Kansas City – who co-led a presentation titled “Mental Health Issues of Your Student Staff: What All Entry-Level Professionals Need to Know” at the 2008 ACUHO-I annual conference – provides intensive training on mental health resources for staff members on his campus: “We bring in our director of counseling to talk to our staff about maintaining balances, and we bring in the director of students with disabilities services to explain his role as well.” Grospitch also educates staff members on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). “We teach them that they can’t make accommodations for someone if they haven’t asked for them, but we encourage them to document behaviors,” said Grospitch. He also is careful to point out where boundaries exist. “The staff role is to serve as a resource. If someone is slipping into the role of a counselor, stop. We have these resources on campus to avoid liability.” UniversiTy of MinnesoTa, Twin ciTies Back to Cool Table Desk w/i-trek™ Thewww.brillcompany.com Brill Company Magnolia Sleeper Chairhttp://www.brillcompany.com
