First takes Street Dixon Rick Turns Vanderbilt Commons Green Opened in August 2008, new residence halls of The Commons at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, were designed by Street Dixon Rick Architecture, PLC. Previously, two of the residence halls received Silver LEED certification and then, in February 2009, three received Gold certification. According to a press release, these halls are among the first LEED-certified university projects in Tennessee. The university was also awarded the Tennessee Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award in 2008 for this multi-year project. Some green features of the halls are reflective roofs to reduce the use of air-conditioning, dualstage lighting controls in student rooms, and bamboo flooring in study areas. “It is a rare opportunity to work on a project that will impact generations of students for many years,” says Baird Dixon, AIA, LEED-AP, principal of Street Dixon Rick Architecture. “This project really was about creating a whole new type of community – a community of scholars – for Vanderbilt. To do so in a historic collegiate setting made this effort even more meaningful.” grOUnD breakin gs Clemson University Clemson, South Carolina Projected Opening: April 2009 • Cost: $11.5 million Built by Yeargin Potter Shackelford Construction, every aspect of Rhodes Hall Annex is green, including the recycling of all excess building materials.
