Among the questions posted to the leaders of 46 four- and two-year college housing departments were those specifically related to what they saw as the major issues they would face in the next five years. Just over 39 percent listed security and fire safety; based on other answers, it appears that they intend to turn to technology to make that happen. The CPM survey also lists desired security upgrades. Topping the list at 46 percent is the installation of security cameras around residence halls. Only 30 percent, however, listed installing cameras inside the hall. Other high-ranking options included installing keycard systems and mass notification systems. Considerably lower was the option of increasing security patrols and adding security/reception posts at the building entrances. These ideas are being put into practice. Elsewhere in the report we learn that, of the surveyed hall projects from 2008, almost 90 percent featured card access to the building, 57 percent had external video surveillance, and 43 percent had internal video surveillance.
