business Having affordable, safe, and accessible housing for students is a key ingredient to the higher education system in our country. From your perspective what role should campus housing play in making American higher education distinctive? How should campus housing programs contribute to the learning that occurs for students at our colleges and universities? MCB: For those institutions that consider the residential experience as central to their missions, housing is a key component of how an institution defines itself as a living and learning community. I think the most encouraging trends in campus housing are those that leverage the academic experience students have in the classroom. Academic-focused housing, specialized residence halls, or learning pods all enhance the learning process. Colleges and universities have been facing for years large deferred maintenance costs. Often times much of the deferred maintenance load has been for historic and older buildings on campuses such as residence halls. From your perspective, what longterm impact will this economy have on an institution’s ability to manage deferred maintenance and/or proceed with planned new construction and renovation projects? MCB: Colleges and universities could be entering a new era, given the intensity of the economic downturn. It is a fact of life that, at the present time, there are insufficient revenues to renovate facilities outside the academic core. Many presidents will look to student housing administrators to be creative and economical when planning renovations and upgrades. What creative strategies have you seen used for funding deferred maintenance, renovation, and new construction projects, particularly in housing programs? MCB: College and universities need to be creative and innovative when considering sources of funding for maintenance, renovation, and construction. Many campuses have turned to corporate and community partners, such as local builders or housing concerns. Also of interest are partnerships that allow new housing to be developed while sharing the responsibility and cost of construction and maintenance between the institution and private concerns. contInues 66
