Conversations from meeting other people working in the profession and people who became mentors and role models to me. I was encouraged to get involved with ACUHO-I by my supervisor and then became a Canadian district representative. During my role as CDR, I worked with the marketing folks and the Internationalisation Committee (Global Initiatives Network). I learned more about the study tours, and the committee finalized a draft of the study tour manual. I also got to work with the Internationalization Task Force, and I learned so much about the issues. This was the time on the board when internationalization became a strategic initiative. I will never forget a meeting we had with the central office. One of the staff members said that the office was much better off having international members to help them learn and improve their services. She said that the international membership was critical to being the best association to all its members. Looking back, it was a turning point for ACUHO-I. and training RAs, living and learning experiences, and basic but important facts about facilities. Even though there are some cultural differences between American and Mexican universities, we have many things in common, and there is a lot to learn from each other. Fernandez: Our residential college project started with a benchmarking study with different universities that have mature residential colleges; this was done in 2004. As important as this benchmarking was, so was the attendance of the student affairs and facilities directives to the ACUHO-I Conferences (I was not in this residential college project at that time). My first experience with ACUHO-I was when I was the new CEO back in 2006. Going to the annual conference in Seattle was very enriching, since all this was new to me. I learned a lot about leadership as a CEO, recruiting Thompson: I have enjoyed attending the various conferences but sometimes feel frustrated that as an international member more isn’t done to understand how we operate differently than the majority in ACUHO-I. For the most part, things like developmental practices, programming, and training translate quite nicely across borders.
