reporting out Survey Highlights Points of Student Mental Health Care According to a survey conducted by the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors, counseling centers continue to be understaffed. Presented at the NASPA annual conference in Seattle, Washington, in March, the preliminary findings show that on average there is a ratio of one professional staff person to 1,952 students. Ideally, counselors would like to see that ratio at 1 to 1,500. The findings also showed that some budgets were cut during the 2007-2008 academic year. This was true for 10 percent of 391 respondents. However, half of the respondents noted that their budgets had remained the same. More highlighted findings are as follows: • Twenty percent of the respondents said that they are providing adequate hours of psychiatric service, although 42 percent said that they should provide more hours. • Respondents said that about 37 percent of their clients suffer from depression, 36.6 percent have anxiety, and 14.4 percent have suicidal thoughts or behavior. CUPA-HR Takes Pulse of Higher Ed Staffing To study the effects of the economy on higher ed staff, CUPA-HR conducted a survey from January 21 through February 19 of 330 institutions, asking about issues like hiring freezes, reductions in force, and unpaid furloughs. For many institutions, controlling overtime for non-exempt staff, issuing hiring freezes, and delaying hiring are the methods currently used to keep departments within their budgets. As for compensation, salary freezes are the most common method of economizing. Also, the majority of respondents reported that the salary increase pool has not been affected by the economic downturn. ASJA Rolls Out New Name Formerly known as the Association for Student Judicial Affairs (ASJA), this association, with board approval, has changed its name to the Association for Student Conduct Administration (ASCA). The motivation for the name change is the recognition of the type of work their members do. Members felt that the title of “conduct administrators” more accurately reflects the work of the profession than does the title of “judicial officers.” A new Web site will be rolled out over the coming months as well. Check out the changes at www.theasca.org. 2 Talking STick
