Leslie Woltenberg, the livinglearning communities coordinator at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, explains that social network analysis is a useful alternative to more traditional assessment methods: “I like the ability to blend qualitative and quantitative analysis. Social network analysis produces a nice visual that can be easily translated for presentations, discussions, and conferences. Particularly in the living-learning community area, this method of analysis is well suited to help tease out behavioral dynamics and traits among a group of people.” The roots of social network analysis are interdisciplinary, growing from such diverse fields as sociology, biology, and management. One important theory, introduced by sociologist Mark Granovetter, is that of the “strength of weak ties,” which describes how people most often find new jobs through acquaintances and friends of friends, rather than through their close associates. Now, in higher education, social network analysis can be used to find out more about how students become part of the institution, both academically and socially. those similar to themselves? In a study at Syracuse University in New York (based on a survey designed in the fall of 2006), the community networks formed by students in an arts-themed living-learning program Comparing resiDential Communities Institutions can harness the power of network analysis to more closely examine the communities they create. How does the structure of communities both support students in a new environment while also challenging them to explore? Do students have connections only to potential Applications of social network Analysis: • • • • • • • • Organizational communication patterns Student academic and/or social interactions RA discussion and evaluation Community comparisons Affiliation networks with campus organizations Educational outcomes associated with network position Support networks Discussion starters for training and staff meetings common concepts in social network Analysis Actor Tie The individual unit under study, such as a student. The specific relationship between two actors: Ties can have direction, value, and content. Sociogram A diagram that depicts the network, where actors are nodes and ties are the lines that connect the nodes. The specific location of an actor in a network, defined by mathematical properties. The number of potential ties that are actually present: A dense community has more ties between members than does a less dense one. A set of measures dealing with an actor’s degree of connectedness within the network: A student with a high degree of centrality has connections to many other students. A subgroup of the network in which all actors have ties to all the other actors. Position Density Centrality Clique July + auguST 2009 17
