Program Documents Institutions’ Progress Toward Sustainability ACUHO-I has recently become a founding partner for STARS. The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System is an innovative, voluntary self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to gauge progress toward sustainability and earn recognition for sustainability leadership. After three years of development, STARS 1.0 is the first version through which participants will be able to earn a rating. STARS will provide a standard, comprehensive way to assess the sustainability performance of higher education institutions and to measure a single institution’s progress over time. In addition, it will provide a central source for standardized information about what colleges and universities are doing to move toward sustainability. Why should an institution use STARS? Colleges and universities can use STARS to gain recognition for and share information about their sustainability accomplishments. STARS also enables institutions to track their progress over time and identify areas for improvement. In addition, by standardizing and simplifying the process of gathering information about sustainability achievements, STARS will also help enable institutions to compare their sustainability performance to that of other institutions. To encourage use of this rating system, AASHE will reorganize its annual awards program around STARS and will be working to publicize the achievements of STARS participants. For example, AASHE will be integrating STARS into its online resource center so that all activities recognized under STARS are publicized in the resource center as well. BusiNess oPerAtioNs CoNfereNCe summit DisCovers soLutioNs More than 120 ACUHO-I members – representing the business operations, information technology, conference services, marketing, assignments, and finance aspects of college and university housing – gathered at the conclusion of the 2009 ACUHO-I Business Operations Conference for a summit of ideas. Titled “Innovative Ideas for Current Economic Conditions” and facilitated by Jon Hockman, principal of a professional facilitating company called The d3 Group, the summit explored current campus conditions, the challenges that are presently being faced, and the solutions that have been discovered. Presummit readings as well as a copy of the workbook used by participants are available in the ACUHO-I online library. When completed, a report of the summit findings will be made available to the ACUHO-I membership as well. Watch the ACUHO-I Web site and weekly e-mail announcements for more details. How much will it cost an institution to participate in STARS? Institutions that register on or before December 31, 2009: AASHE member $ 650 Non-member $ 1,150 Institutions that register on or after January 1, 2010: AASHE member $ 900 Non-member $ 1,400 Once your institution has registered and fees have been submitted to AASHE, data collection and documentation may begin.
