• evaluate programs and personnel; • celebrate your successes; • support the request for additional funds from the university and external community; and • assist in meeting accreditation requirements, models of best practices, and national benchmarks. Randy Swing, co-director and senior scholar for the Policy Center on the First Year of College in Brevard, North Carolina, has made a clear case that conducting assessment that is purposeful, useful, and reflective can save time and make us more effective in our work with students. Assessment can also serve as an evaluative tool by either reinforcing a current practice or providing guidance on what and how to change a practice. In Assessment Methods for Student Affairs (2008), Schuh and his co-authors indicate that student affairs is being asked to demonstrate various forms of accountability, such as contributing to student learning and to institutional retention efforts, withstanding greater involvement by and scrutiny from politicians and governmental agencies, meeting requirements from accrediting agencies that can only be answered by assessment evidence, justifying the cost of attendance, and meeting benchmarking guidelines and living up to comparisons to industry standards. Through all the theoretical research and practical applications, a clear theme for a housing department’s assessment programs is “demonstrating impact.” Ted Elling, associate vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, explains, “Departments had better be in a position to demonstrate impact of programs and services if we want to continue to supply quality experiences and services for students. We have to prove their impact which we can only do through assessment.” When it is all boiled down, the overarching reasons for conducting assessment are to demonstrate effectiveness, document improvement, and provide accountability. As housing departments develop their assessment plans, they must also tie them to the departmental mission and goals. Deb Coffin, associate vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students at the University of Colorado at Boulder, affirms the importance of tying assessment into goal setting: “Goals are only as good as we are able to measure them. Goals without measurement are empty goals. Assessment provides that measuring stick.” conTinues 34 Take a Seat the performance is about to begin The Brill Company www.brillcompany.com
