At the University of Florida in Gainesville, most of the returning veterans are only slightly older than the average first-year student, having served for maybe three or four years. In this case, many returning veterans do not require family housing but are looking for a slightly more private living arrangement than that available to most first-year students. The university often makes available to them apartmentstyle housing with single bedrooms, but shared bath and living areas. Such housing is generally reserved for upperclass students, which also makes the ages of students living in these units closer to those of the veterans. Housing Can Help Ease the Transition Different campuses report different patterns for the returning veterans they serve, so the experience of any given campus is likely to reflect the culture of the campus.
