reporting out Students Find Online Counseling Helpful A group of researchers in Germany developed and tested ES[S]PRIT, an Internet-based program to prevent eating disorders in college women. ES[S]PRIT was advertised in a Heidelberg University newsletter and paper and via flyers and posters, which requested responses to the program. Most of the respondents (78%) were women. Visitors to ES[S]PRIT were prompted to register and to complete a short questionnaire evaluating their risk of developing an eating disorder. If a participant’s replies to the questionnaire indicated a possible eating disorder, he or she was offered online chat counseling and feedback. In severe cases, the participant was referred to the university’s counseling center. After completing the questionnaire, respondents were free to use the message board to discuss topics of interest, including nutrition and food, and the postings were then screened for pro-anorexia messages. Participants re-took the questionnaire periodically, so their progress could be tracked. The researchers theorize that this open-ended format was more inviting to students, who are often reluctant to go to the counseling center for fear of embarrassment, and that the participants were open to suggestions and assistance in an online format. Research Highlights Positive Outcomes for Cost of Student Services According to research by Douglas Webber and Ronald Ehrenberg of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, “Student service expenditures influence graduation and first-year persistence rates.” Together they have written a working paper outlining how institutions that reallocate budget dollars from some institutional expenditures to cover costs of some student services have higher graduation and persistence rates.
