BY THE NUMBERS
When a campus signs on to the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), they agree to take on at least two actions, from a list of seven, within two years. According to the 2009 annual report, 15 schools went above and beyond, though, and committed to all seven, which includes speciﬁc actions such as the following:

Ensure that new campus construction is built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver standard or equivalent. Purchase ENERGY STAR-certiﬁed products in all areas for which such ratings exist.

Offset all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by institution. Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for institution’s faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

NUMBER OF SCHOOLS THAT HAVE COMMITTED TO ALL SEVEN TANGIBLE ACTIONS FOR SUSTAINABILITY AS OUTLINED BY THE AMERICAN COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTS CLIMATE COMMITMENT

Purchase or produce at least 15 percent of institution’s electricity from renewable sources.

Support climate and sustainability shareholder proposals at companies where institution’s endowment is invested. Participate in Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt three or more associated measures to reduce waste. The 15 Earth-friendly schools are Antioch University New England, Bowie State University, Eastern University, Gloucester County College, Grand Rapids Community College, Loyola University New Orleans, Manhattanville College, Morgan State University, Penn State Berks, Shasta College, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, University of Massachusetts Boston, University of Washington Tacoma, Victor Valley College, and Western Technical College.
