SPOTLIGHT
Boston University
(Boston, Massachusetts)
Name: 33 Harry Agganis Way Residence Hall Opened: August 2009 Cost: $140 million Architect: Cannon Design From walls and furniture made from rapidly renewable bamboo to occupancy sensors that shut off mechanical systems when apartments are not in use to a ventilation system that captures waste heat from exhaust air to condition fresh air to the mechanical units, it is clear that green features were considered in even the most minute elements of 33 Harry Agganis Way Residence Hall. If sustainability is only skin deep, Boston University is still at the top of its game: With smart skin, which is an exterior envelope cladding made of brick veneer, precast concrete panels, and a terra cotta rain-screen system, the new hall is expected to qualify as the largest EPA ENERGY STAR-rated residence hall in the country, reducing carbon emissions by more than 1,100 tons per year. If that wasn’t enough to earn green accolades, the highly reflective roofing materials to reduce the heat-island effect, transparent double-glazed low-E coated glass, complete air barrier and high levels of insulation at the exterior, dedicated areas for collection and storage of recyclables, and low-flow water fixtures should put it at the top of the energy efficiency list. The new 396,000-square-foot high rise, part of the 10-acre Student Village, provides housing for 962 upper-level students. The building consists of two towers, one 19 stories and one 26 stories, which share a common core, lower entry lobby, and activity level. Students can choose to live in four-person apartment-style suites with a living room and kitchen or eight-person suites with a mixture of single and double rooms. “In our environment, we have a lot of traditional residence halls,” says Marc Robillard, director of housing. “Our goal is to have over 80 percent of our undergraduate students in university housing. We needed housing that would be attractive for continuing students to stay on campus.”

Due to the height and exposed location of the tower, a 40-inch deep, 7,000square-foot suspended glass-entry canopy was created around the building for the purposes of wind mitigation, which proved to be visually appealing as well. With this addition, 33 Harry Agganis Way Residence Hall is now a focal point within Student Village, which houses 1,800 students in various residence high rises, along with a fitness and recreation center and entertainment facilities. Cannon Design has included space for 500 more rooms to be constructed in Student Village. Robillard expects future projects to include just as many unique green features as 33 Harry Agganis Way Residence Hall: “Energy costs money, and quite frankly, students expect an institution to be a good citizen and to reduce the amount of energy without negatively impacting the quality of life.”
