Eddie Hull is the new executive director of housing and residence life. He assumes overall leadership for one of the largest residential systems in the nation, with over 12,000 students living on campus and with plans to grow by as many as an additional 3,000 beds within the next decade. Hull most recently served in CHO roles at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, after having several leadership roles at his alma mater, the University of Arizona in Tucson. An active member of ACUHO-I for nearly 30 years, he has served the association in numerous capacities, including being president in 2004-05.

As a leader, he was miles apart from his peers, with great interpersonal skills that imbued him with a great human chemistry and magnetic charisma. One of the lasting legacies of his leadership is the establishment of the Southern African Chapter of the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I-SAC). On returning from the ACUHO-I conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (in June 2005), he supported – both financially and morally – the idea of TUT hosting the first Student Housing Conference which was held in March 2006 in Port Elizabeth. He hosted the then ACUHO-I President (Jack Collins) and ACUHO-I Executive Director (Sallie Traxler) who officially launched the establishment of ACUHO-I-SAC in a gala dinner held at the Kings Beach on the coast of Port Elizabeth. On our way to the University of Venda (on May 19) the three of us (Mark, Patson, and I) expressed concern about his constant struggle with ill health. We spoke fondly of his selfless contribution to the “birth of ACUHO-I-SAC” and how it would be fitting to give him an award of acknowledgement and appreciation at the Student Housing African Summit on May 30-June 3, 2010, at Stellenbosch University. Little did we realize that in the early hours of May 20, 2010, he would be leaving this earthly world. It would have been great for him to have received such an honorary accolade in his lifetime, but it would seem God had other plans for him. In these trying times (ahead of his funeral and memorial service) as we all battle with pain, grief and mourning, we need to look up to Mr. Rabie for consolation and emotional and spiritual strength. He has taught us well, and he would like us not to mourn him, but to continue his legacy of building a firm and formidable “world-class student housing professional practice” almost second to none in Africa and amongst the best in the world. Let us celebrate his great life and achievements. May He Rest in Peace and Forever Live in Our Hearts and Memories.
