down with pointless meetings nor would you propose a meeting when an e-mail or phone call will suffice. Supervisors are more impressed with efficient workers than with those who stay in their offices after the street lights come on.
Scoufield: I totally agree with the
importance of networking and learning to work efficiently. I feel like efficiency is something I am constantly working on as my job changes over the years. I also think learning how to take advantage of professional development opportunities is important: getting involved with national and regional or even international organizations, looking into different career paths within student affairs, learning how to
either specialize or generalize (and the benefits of both), and learning how to give back to the profession (presentations, publications, webinars) and generally how to continue learning beyond grad school and to tailor that learning to what you’re personally or professionally interested in. Learning how to market yourself is also important. I find that a lot of the new professionals I work with have a very hard time marketing themselves, setting themselves apart from other candidates (on paper and in interviews); they aren’t sure how to articulate their goals, and they can find themselves pigeon holed in an area they fell into rather than selected. Partnering with parents is also a skill that I wish I was better adept at before I made so many mistakes! Training on the importance of parent relationships, the relevance of FERPA,
the role parents play with their students and in the university (as tuition payers, donors, and alumni and as participants in family weekends and student support).
Watson: Someone mentioned politics
earlier. That is something I wish I had a class on. Over all the years I have learned that it’s a part of everything that you do. Sometimes it’s bad and sometimes it’s good, but it’s always there. As a grad student you often sit on the sidelines and watch but don’t often have the opportunity to get involved. I feel that this kind of knowledge starts with networking. It’s important for graduate students to be given the opportunity to attend conferences and to interact with others so they can develop good relationships and support networks. TS
