inform alumni who are invested in the specific residence halls, focusing their message on “This is what is best for A&M,” says Mizer. Recognizing the emotional attachment that students and alumni can have to their residence halls, the department is selling small wooden replicas of the buildings and trying to decide what to do with the bricks. Clear communication was also key for The Ohio State University in Columbus when it relocated its Stadium Scholarship Housing program from the OSU stadium to another facility. The present Stadium Scholars and alumni, who are notoriously loyal to the program, might easily have felt that moving out of the stadium was a bad idea. Jack Schreibman, an alumnus of the program who was also on the Stadium Scholars alumni board when

the decision was made, notes that “Stadium Scholars were saddened when the program moved from the stadium to Mack Hall. Generations of Buckeyes had lived there and had participated in the program.” However, clear communication and transparency about plans and goals effectively allayed most people’s anxieties. “The university and residence life specifically did an amazing job keeping current students and alumni of the program involved and informed,” Schriebman says. Residence life staff met with students currently enrolled in the program and fully explained the timeline and subsequent decisions that were made. Alumni received notification from university executives and residence life staff simultaneously. As a result of this kind of reaching out, Schreibman says he felt involved in the decision

and especially appreciated the added touch of receiving a personal letter from university president Gordon Gee when the decision was about to be announced. After examining all the objective data – a building’s age and physical structure, the number of students needing housing, the demands for learning spaces or amenities or new technology – planners should also look at the emotional factors involved in razing a residence hall. The building is more than just a pile of bricks, more than a construction designed for student living quarters. It is a safe haven for residents, a place to live and learn and tS grow, and a vast storehouse for students’ memories.
