This coming together of academic affairs and student affairs has not always been a smooth process, but the idea that the walls between classroom and residence hall – both literal and ﬁgurative – are beginning to come down is encouraging. Like a marriage, the relationship can work when there is a solid foundation of trust, both sides are communicating effectively, and each partner is committed to seeing the relationship succeed. The question then becomes how can we build a more perfect union between student affairs and academic affairs? When they were ﬁrst established, college campuses were made up of little more than a single building. Students and faculty were separated by little more than a staircase, which was also sometimes the only barrier between living quarters and classrooms. Over the years, the two sides drifted farther and farther apart. These days, however, many higher education institutions operate under the premise that faculty-student interaction should occur not only in the classroom but also in the residence halls, and as a result faculty-in-residence (FIR) programs are prospering, and living-learning

tep inside the door of any residence hall and you will witness a ﬂurry of activities. Friends gather. Students study. Clubs meet. Halls can buzz with excitement practically 24 hours a day. Increasingly, that buzz has come to include the sounds of faculty members bringing their lectures, presentations, and good oldfashioned dialogue directly to the students where they are: in the residence halls.
