Making the Connection
Time is tight for everyone, and faculty members – who may be trying to survive in the world of publish or perish – are no different. For that reason, any opportunity to connect residence hall programs with a faculty member’s research should be utilized. Aaron Brower, associate vice chancellor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, suggests that connecting residence hall programs with specific areas of study will lead to greater enthusiasm and success on both sides. “It has to be a genuine passion of theirs, since the investment of time and energy will be great, just like for the students and staff involved. The best way to recruit faculty is to approach them and ask them what kind of topic or interest area THEY want to engage students around.” Phyllis McCluskey-Titus, associate professor in the Department of Educational Administration and Foundations at Illinois State University in Normal, shares an appreciation for the value of allowing faculty members to explore the areas that are of the most interest to them. “Approach faculty whose research agenda or teaching load ties into something related to what you want. If you need faculty participants on a housing fee/rent increase committee, try someone who teaches about budgeting or facility design and management. If you want to develop a learning community tied to specific careers or majors, you include departmental faculty in the development of those programs as well as the selection process for students who will live in those communities. And if you have a concern about binge drinking, you seek out a faculty member conducting research on adolescent drinking behaviors and consult with that person.” Making such a connection is a way to kill two birds with the proverbial single stone. Each side gains. The program benefits from the involvement of enthusiastic and engaged faculty members, and faculty members benefit from being able to interact with students in a different way and in a different environment.
