n the summer of 2004, John Q. Student graduated from high school and began the exciting journey of preparing for college. He still remembers the excitement of opening his mailbox and finding all the letters and brochures about registration and new student orientation as well as his housing contract and the name of his new roommate. John and his parents quickly completed the forms and got them back in the mail where they joined the stack of other envelopes back on campus. When move-in day finally arrived, John and his family traveled to campus, waited in registration lines, and eventually settled into his new home, ready to begin his college experience. Fast-forward six years to 2010. Now John’s sister Jane is beginning her own college adventure, but with a few changes from what John experienced. This time, everything Jane needed to know about registration, orientation, and housing arrived with a “ding” in her e-mail inbox. Within a few minutes, she was able to secure an orientation date and confirm her housing assignment. Rather than wait for move-in day, Jane heads to Facebook to either check out her assigned roommate or search for a new roommate on her own. When she and her family arrive on campus, the car is still filled with her belongings, but this time all the check-in information is on her smart phone. Let the future begin! The differences in these two experiences reveal a fundamental shift in how housing operations have been able to utilize information technology – and, given the
