staff in housing departments? One major benefit has been the shift away from paper, which saves both time and thousands of dollars in postage and materials. DeCoster recognizes both the benefits and challenges of working with this new technology, for it means a significant shift in the way professionals do their work. “Getting used to having everything on the web can be challenging. It is nice to have a paper file in front of you especially when capturing notes. Before, you could just throw it into a file.” One of the greatest challenges is the possibility that the human factor can get lost in these kinds of transactions. “It is important to work through the technology, what it can and cannot do. Sometime a process is cumbersome when managed through technology, and it helps to have the human factor. There is always a trade off.”
Considering how much information about a person’s background and personal life is now so easily accessible, Shevlin is concerned about issues related to security: “Student data is everywhere, and everyone wants access to the data. It is important to educate the students and staff on safety and security.” She also warns that data can be misinterpreted. “The more people who have access to data, the more you lose control of interpretation.” Furthermore, there are legal implications to all this freeflowing data: “Google has student data on servers all over the world, and there are some laws in Massachusetts that prohibit having data in other countries.” Though some may fear that the human factor will become lost in automated interactions, others recognize that in some respects it
becomes more magnified. “Staff members are now able to take extra time with students and parents. It is good customer service. After changes like this have happened, people usually sit back and say it wasn’t so bad. The benefits outweigh any challenges,” Mian explains. No matter what the future, one thing is clear: the college and university housing profession is headed full speed ahead into the technological age, and the students are the ones leading the way. tS
