Wake Forest University
(Winston Salem, North Carolina)
Name: South hall Opened: August 19, 2010 • Cost: $20 million Architect: hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company With innovative designs and sustainable features, South hall – the newest residence hall at Wake Forest University – has paved the way for a greener future on this campus. housing 201 first-year students, the 67,000-square-foot building includes amenities that are beneficial to both students and the environment. The four-story residence hall features a multimedia classroom on the first floor, a movie and game room, laundry facilities, and recreation space for resident use. To promote student interaction and provide community space, each floor and wing of the hall offers kitchen lounges with flat-screen televisions as well as study rooms. Patios with lounge furniture are also available to students at various entrances to the hall. Constructed from locally sourced materials, the residence hall includes numerous sustainable features from recycling centers and solar hot water collectors to dual-flush toilets and low-flow shower heads. A distinctive aspect to the building is its design to allow more natural light through the windows in order to help students save electricity. Residents of the building have the opportunity to track and visualize the use of energy, water, and solar resources through user-friendly monitors within the hall. As part of the university’s dedication to sustainability, South hall is the first residence building on the Wake Forest campus to receive LEED Silver certification. The university’s golf center has also received Silver certification, and this will be the goal for the new admissions building, which is under construction. A fully designed plan for an upperclass residence hall with sustainable features has also been developed by the university. Denise Williard, the assistant director of assessment and marketing, emphasizes the impact of these buildings and university developments on shaping campus life: “It serves as a catalyst for a myriad of programs and discussions surrounding the sustainability efforts on campus and around the globe.”
