beyond what is available to the general student population. According to NCAA regulations adopted on January 1, 2000, under Division III Title: 16.5, “An institution may finance housing and meal benefits incidental to a student-athlete’s participation in intercollegiate athletics provided such housing and benefits are available to students in general.” Though there may be a few minor accommodations for student athletes, such as supplying longer beds or providing housing over breaks, they are treated like other students and are held to the same standards in terms of conduct and judicial processes. Division III schools do, however, recognize that student athletes sometimes have special needs. One problem that many of them face is trying to balance the time needed for academics with the time required for games, practices, and training. In 1991, the NCAA formally recognized the need for more time management and study skills programs for student athletes and determined that academic counseling services could be provided by either athletics or another department. Faculty and coaches obviously play an important role as mentors and educators, a role that can expand in a positive and significant way if it also includes student affairs staff. Residence life professionals can become involved as an important resource for such services and can supplement the help being offered by other offices within student affairs. In recognition of this, professional and paraprofessional residence life staff at several institutions are now providing time management and career workshops in the residence halls, and they often collaborate with other offices that offer additional services. At some institutions, the athletics department falls under the umbrella

Getting Your Teams in Order
According to The National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) website, their association is made up of more than 1,200 member institutions and 380,000 student athletes. Are you working on one of these campuses trying to sort out the best game plan for housing athletes? Along with the story above, here is another resource. In 2005 the Talking Stick published “Integrating Student Athletes into Residence Life,” an article that focused on strategies such as establishing departmental liaisons between athletics and residence life, housing athletes in residence halls with non-athletes, and connecting athletes to the campus community academically by partnering with assistance programs. The Talking Stick recently contacted the professionals who were interviewed for this article and asked if their practices have changed. Each person indicated that they have continued the strategies presented in 2005, and much success has followed. You can find this article in the ACUHO-I online library.

academics before moving to student affairs. Gail Cummings, the director of athletics at Skidmore, called the move “a natural fit because being a part of athletics is a privilege and not a right . . .” Coaches and residence life staff often work together to solve some of the specific problems faced by student athletes. Don Hastings, director of residence life at Skidmore, describes an annual event that requires such teamwork when coaches and residence life staff assist track team athletes with pre-season housing since off-campus student housing is not always ready. Like other Division III institutions, Skidmore encourages its student athletes to pursue a broad range of interests beyond athletics. In fact, both Cummings and Hastings believe that many student athletes select Division III programs because of the wide range of opportunities offered, which can include not only extracurricular activities but also participation in a second sport. Recognizing its mission to treat all students in the same way, whether or not they participate in athletics, Skidmore does not offer any preferential housing accommodations, beyond providing housing during breaks. Many student athletes do need more help with time management skills, but they do not receive any special treatment. Like all other students, they must arrange for excused absences and must work with their professors to make up missed work or classes. At Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, another Division III institution, athletics and residence life are also under the umbrella of student affairs. David Diles, director of athletics, states that having both offices in the same division helps “maintain a studentcentered approach outside academic responsibilities, which makes you cognizant of how it all links to student

of student affairs, uniting the two offices within the division, as is the case at Skidmore College in Saratoga, New York. Up until five years ago, the athletics department had been part of
