or academic manner. There is no assumption of truth. Talking of religion is discussing religion from the standpoint of what a person believes to be true. At public institutions, the issue of religion can be tricky because of the separation of church and state in the United States. The First Amendment of the Constitution protects religious expression and prohibits the establishment of religion by the government. Talking about religion is not prohibited. The Supreme Court recognizes the importance of the role of religion in history and society in the Schempp decision and notes that learning about religion from an objective viewpoint does not go against the First Amendment. This gives public institutions the freedom to have conversations about religion, and it frames conversations around religion. A living-learning community such as RELIC at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers an example of talking about religion at a public institution. This living-learning community educates students about religion without forcing acceptance. Talking about religion promotes awareness of a concept, tradition, or other aspect of a religious faith without attempting to gain acceptance of those beliefs or worldview. Knowing the difference between a conversation about religion and a religious conversation opens the doors to ways in which housing professionals can approach religious issues. Housing professionals find themselves interacting with and responding to the religious beliefs of others many times in ways they might not expect. For example, they may encounter prospective students who require a single-sex residence hall for religious reasons, or they may work with a staff member who must be absent from training due to a religious holiday. Religion can permeate a housing professional’s work with housing operations, student conduct and behavior, and student staff. Policies pertaining to religious expression differ from institution to institution and can cover everything from assignment preferences to the use of residence hall common spaces. Many universities, such as the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley and the University of Iowa in Iowa City, communicate directly to current and prospective students that religion is not used as a criterion in the roommate assignment process.
