Some of the institutions that offer Muslim students special dining options for the month of Ramadan are Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut; Grinnell College in Iowa; and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Barnard College in New York City and The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa are two of many institutions that prohibit the burning of candles and incense even for religious reasons, while William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri, is one that offers an exception for religious observances. These are just a few of many examples of housing policies that intersect with religious traditions. Religion can have an effect on the nuts and bolts of a housing operation. Religious traditions can affect move-in days, residence hall preference, and even residence hall access. In 2008, the University of California system created a policy to address the appropriate response if movein	days	conflicted	with	religious	holidays, specifically, in their case, the Jewish High

Holy Days. This policy extends move-in for the affected students so that they can move on	non-conflicting	days.	The	policy	also	tries to	avoid	such	conflicts	in	the	future,	stating that for academic calendars after 2010, “the responsible university bodies . . . shall choose calendars (semester and quarter) that avoid scheduling fall residence hall movein	days	for	students	that	conflict	with	the observance of a major religious holiday.” Literacy about religious calendars and holidays can help housing staff remain aware	of	religious	holidays	that	may	conflict with move-in, orientation, and staff training. Conflicts	may	require	departments	to extend staffing, welcome programs, and other move-in resources outside their regularly scheduled events. Having a plan and	being	aware	of	potential	conflicts	can make for better use of resources and easier accommodation of students. At Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, the opening of a new residence hall	in	August	2007	illuminated	a	conflict
