CONVERSATIONS

Staffing Strategies
We asked community college members about their staffing structures and how they recruit and retain staff.
Participating in this conversation are Debbie Daniels, director of housing and residence life, Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington; Darese Doskal-Scaffido, director of residence life and judicial affairs, Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden, New York; Steven Crudup, assistant to the dean, student services, Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida; and Lisa Steffensen, director of residence life and housing, Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio.

DARESE DOSKALSCAFFIDO

What does your professional staff structure look like?

Debbie Daniels: Green River Community
College asked Capstone Management to operate their housing facility. Therefore our structure may be different due to the oncampus privatized company overseeing the daily operations of housing.

STEVE CRUDUP

Darese Doskal-Scaffido: We’re actually pretty
traditionally structured. We have a director, associate director, and four live-in residence directors, as well as resident assistants on every	floor.	However,	more	of	the	housing	and other tasks are done in other offices. Facilities is separate from residence life, and a lot of the business/housing is done out of enrollment services, etc. It makes for some interesting department meetings when we bring this variety together. Our office is also the judicial affairs office, and I see all students, not just housing. So it all gets a little confusing for students sometimes also.

HCC has me (as assistant dean) on the property to oversee crisis management, counseling,	roommate	conflicts,	and	activity planning. There are eight resident assistants who live with the students, as well as four to five student workers who manage the mailroom, security sign-in, and parking pass systems. The area director reports to the dean of student services and the campus president. The other aspect of staffing is that our onsite security is sub-contracted by the campus public safety office. We have 24-hour security that works with one to three officers per shift, depending on the day and time. We are also supported by other campus offices like financial aid, card access and identification cards, and counseling.

Lisa Steffensen: We have one director,
one assistant director, two undergraduate hall directors, and 35 resident success mentors. Facilities is separate, reporting to the campus maintenance and housekeeping director. How did your institution/department arrive at this structure?

DEBBIE DANIELS

Steven Crudup: HCC’s housing is foundationowned. The foundation hired Peak Campus Management (formerly Place Properties) to run the leasing, billing, and maintenance side of the house. They have a property manager, assistant manager, leasing manager, four to five student employees (focused on leasing), and two maintenance staff. The property management reports to the vice president for administration and the college attorney, who oversee the contract.

Daniels: This structure is similar to other
Capstone Management sites across the country.

Steffensen: Prior to 2008, we had only 500
students living on campus and had just the director and three undergraduate hall directors and the resident success mentors. When we opened two new residence halls in 2008, we
