Starting at Zero

individual fundraising outlined by Lublin: finding the shared interest between donor and project. WIU’s innovative approach has helped them reduce travel costs in their operating budgets, tangibly connect former staff back with their program, and create a link between former and current staff that will no doubt generate additional commitment by the younger staff members when it comes time to “pay it forward.”

Principle #3: Do More by Bartering with Zero
Bartering, Lublin asserts, is generally viewed negatively in both the forprofit and not-for-profit worlds in the United States, as it is not considered a cultural norm. However, if we were to look closely at our own housing organizations, we would find several examples of bartering already in existence in our practice. For example, does your program fund a position that is technically external to your operation but has a direct impact on your housing program? Do you provide space for electricians, carpenters, academic advisors, programming coordinators, or other individuals/groups in exchange for their time and expertise? Do you offer up free lunches in your dining halls to prospective students and their parents during recruitment or orientation events in order to expose future members of your campus community to your dining programs? Do you actively collaborate with other offices and pool resources to create innovative and engaging programs for your residents? Southern Illinois University Carbondale does all of these things and has done them for years as a matter of practice. These types of bartering arrangements are tangible ways in which housing programs can showcase their role as active and contributing partners in the campus community, and they positively impact our students.

Overall, this book is engaging and insightful, but most importantly it is challenging in a good way. Reading Zilch can help to reframe a perspective on the possibilities for housing programs. There is the traditional way to get things done, but when the rules of the game change (due to budget reductions, a state fiscal crisis, leadership changes, or changing expectations) things need to be looked at differently. To that end, there is a lot to learn from colleagues in the not-for-profit sector, and Lublin’s book is a practical and engaging guide to how we can put

these best practices to work for our own operations. TS
