requires an intentional approach and strategy, particularly when it comes to responding to negative feedback or misinformation. Janus notes that correction of misinformation often comes organically from within the community: “Current students who already know answers to the questions being asked try to answer the questions on our Facebook page for their peers. We just make sure the information is answered accurately and fix anything that might be misguiding.” Handling negative feedback can be a more sensitive situation. Removing negative posts may create the perception that the department is trying to hide something from students or parents. “We have only received one type of negative post,

and it wasn’t that bad. We e-mailed the student personally and told him his concern would be addressed,” says Janus. Perhaps the best response to negative posts is to simply answer them clearly and directly. As Coffman explains, “If someone posts negative feedback, I address the student and follow up as needed. Unless the student has used inappropriate language, we do not take it down from the site. I post a response publicly, but also make personal contact via e-mail or phone.” As much as today’s students enjoy using social media and, to some degree, even expect it to be used by everyone else, including their colleges and universities, relying solely on social media to communicate with students can be a mistake. “We have 2,200 students on campus, but only 650 ‘likes’ of our (Facbeook) page. It’s

important to supplement marketing with the old fashioned methods as well,” Janus advises. Coffman concurs, advocating the continued use of more traditional means of communication: “One of the biggest lessons we have learned is to use social media to complement what we already are doing. We are not in the position to do away with hall flyers, brochures, or e-mails to students and only use social media tools. By using social media, we are able to reinforce our message.” TS
