ACUHO-I Offers Certificate in Occupancy Management
This October, ACUHO-I will offer online classes for its second credentialing program, the Certificate in Occupancy Management. The ACUHO-I Certificate in Occupancy Management prepares participants to understand the occupancy management process at a strategic level and also teaches them how best to implement critical operations and practices. Through two online courses and a capstone project, participants will learn how to collect and manage data as well as make educated predictions and be better suited to navigate the overall process. Participants will learn what questions to ask and what factors to consider while developing an understanding of why each is important in reaching occupancy management goals. Throughout the process, real-world experiences are utilized to assist in the application of this new knowledge. The Certificate in Occupancy Management program is overseen by a task force consisting of seven occupancy management professionals: Glen Weppler of Ryerson University, Julie Phelps from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Vince Roberts of Florida State University, and Lyn Reddington of the University of Northern Iowa, Sean Killion of Temple University, Eric Luskin of The Scion Group, and Scott Gluntz of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. In addition, subject matter experts (SMEs) were recruited to oversee the research, the needs of the occupancy management professional, and the course design and development. Michael Zabriskie, director of the housing information office at the University of Michigan, is the SME for the course “Assess and Define Occupancy Management Policies and Procedures.” Shay Davis Little, director of administrative services and communications at the University of Georgia, is the SME for the course “Administer Occupancy Management Operations.” Participants may take individual courses. To receive the certificate, however, both courses and the capstone must be completed within 24 months. Each course should require 20-25 hours of work. The learning outcomes for these courses are as follows: COURSE 1: ASSESS AND DEFINE OCCUPANCY MANAGEMENT POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Upon completion of this class participants will learn to identify and interpret external laws as well as internal goals and policies related to occupancy management; articulate the alignment of marketing, application, and billing cycles within an institution’s calendar; identify and explain factors that influence occupancy management processes; analyze enrollment and occupancy trends and key benchmarks; outline available strategies to align occupancy management goals with demand and inventory; and articulate the needs of various stakeholders as they pertain to policies, assignment procedures, and finances. COURSE 2: ADMINISTER OCCUPANCY MANAGEMENT OPERATIONS Upon completion of this class participants will learn to describe activities involved in application and assignment processes and identify the sequence of activities most suitable to meet occupancy goals; maintain clear communication and process integration with students as well as the departments involved in managing student records; explain daily factors that must be accounted for to ensure that occupancy management goals are maintained; and understand application, assignment, and financial information and develop performance reports utilizing a student housing information management system. CAPSTONE PROJECT The capstone project begins by asking participants to use the concepts and exercises from the coursework to conduct a case study analysis of a hypothetical university campus in order to provide a comprehensive occupancy management report to a new executive director. Using demographic information, values, and the campus mission – as well as housing-specific factors such as budgets, policies, and goals – participants create a project timeline to achieve the occupancy goals.

Registration is now open at www. acuho-i.org. Participants who register for the entire certificate program – two online courses and the capstone project – rather than purchasing them separately receive a discount. In addition, 10 percent discounts are available to individuals or organizations that purchase five or more of the same item such as an individual online class or a complete certificate program package. COURSE 1: Assess and Define Occupancy Management Policies and Procedures $325 (ACUHO-I members) $405 (nonmembers) COURSE 2: Administer Occupancy Management Operations $325 (ACUHO-I members) $405 (nonmembers) Capstone Project $475 (ACUHO-I members) $595 (nonmembers) Complete Certificate in Occupancy Management Program (2 courses + capstone) $1,000 (ACUHO-I members) $1,250 (nonmembers)
