In memoRIAm:

Donald Kilbourn Donald Kilbourn passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2011, at the age of 94. He had worked for Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant for more than three decades and had served in multiple capacities there, including director of housing, foreign student advisor, professor of psychology, assistant to the president, and head of the counseling center. He was the first director of housing at Central Michigan, from 1946 to 1957. In 1948, Kilbourn had the foresight to ask students what they wanted in their rooms and then designed the spaces around their wishes. To this day, Central Michigan has the honor of saying they were the first campus in the U.S. to offer suites with bathrooms. According to Joanie Schmidt, associate director of residence life at Central Michigan, this style has served as a prototype for many other housing programs. And when the university began discussions about building new halls in 2001, they followed another one of Kilbourn’s ideas, which was to have facilities personnel build a mock-up of a suite design being considered so students could view it and provide their input before the final designs were approved. Also during his first decade at Central Michigan, Kilbourn became very involved with what was then a fledgling group called the Association of College and University Housing Officers, attending the second conference, which was hosted by Purdue University, in West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1950. He went on to serve as the association’s president from 1956 to 1957. A few comments from his president’s report further highlight his forward thinking and his passion for the field. One was that the problem of recruiting and retaining qualified housing and food service personnel “involves such areas as pay, prestige, workload, and role. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain and keep qualified staff. We must face up to the problem in the near future, and I believe we should begin to study the situation now.” Another was “As the services of the association are expanded, we shall have to be careful to keep our efforts channeled in those directions which have merit and refrain from dissipating energy in areas where we are not prepared to function effectively.” Kilbourn earned three degrees from Michigan State University in East Lansing, including a Ph.D. in education. He went on to serve as an artillery intelligence officer in World War II in Europe in General George S. Patton’s Third Army. Following retirement from Central Michigan, he and his wife Helen moved to Tucson, Arizona, in 1991. His wife of 68 years passed away in 2010. He also wrote three books: How Sweet Is Your Suite? (the history of housing at CMU); a book of his memoirs which included a chapter on his time as an artillery intelligence officer in World War II and briefly discussed his chance encounter with General George S. Patton via telephone; and Murder on the 17th Green, a murder mystery set on the golf course in Oro Valley near his Arizona home. Joanie Schmidt shares this in his memory: “He was a wonderful mentor to many students, faculty, and staff members over the years (and continued to serve as one for me until his death) – because of our love for and leadership roles in ACUHO-I (ACUHO for him) we kept in contact over the years, and he was a guiding force for me for decades. In fact, when I became president at the Kansas City conference he sent me flowers just before the closing banquet.”
