the momentum and focus on their competencies to create rubrics to evaluate applications and assist in the staff selection process. He explains, “After focusing on what competencies were important for our staff, we would have short-changed ourselves if we just used that for evaluation purposes; we would have lost out on potential wealth and benefits elsewhere, like selection and training.” There are a number of other potential uses of rubrics in residence life. Given that rubrics are used for observation, they can be functional tools to document incident reports or crisis response paperwork. With respect to programming, rubrics could be utilized to measure how well programming efforts meet social and educational requirements. Moreover, as resident assistant leadership or instructional courses may have documents to be evaluated or the behavior of participants to be

objectively observed, rubrics can be utilized across all sections to help ensure consistency and methods with such processes. As an example, Albart notes that UT-Arlington uses rubrics to score the résumés that students must create for their instructional course. Identifying the variety of uses is just part of the process; there are several other important steps to implementing rubrics.
