and overall productivity, for he had replaced a bad habit with an activity that brought him joy. Achor describes the falling up principle as a way to overcome stress and anxiety and build upon it for future challenges. One way to do this is by strengthening what he refers to as the Tetris effect, which is a way to rewire our brains to see possibility instead of impossibility, thus allowing us to seize opportunities more often. In order to maintain this mindset in the midst of challenges and stress, part of falling up is keeping our Tetris effect positive. One tool for achieving this is the gratitude list: Identifying three good things that happened in a day and doing this for an extended period of time rewires our brain to see more
possibilities and gives us more overall happiness. The book closes with a chapter discussing the ripple effect that regular use of these seven principles can have. Given the number of students and colleagues that housing professionals interact with in the diverse world of higher education, the ripples can spread broadly and widely. One person in the student affairs field who serves as a pebble or small stone in this way is Paul Wesselmann, whose blog and regular postings, called the Ripples Project, has a similar aim: as the website phrases it, “to encourage small waves of kindness.” The Happiness Advantage is a must read for any housing professional regardless of position or title. In order
to be successful as a professional you must be happy with yourself, your environment, and those you work with on a regular basis. Then and only then will you be able to reap the many benefits that come from the advantages of being truly happy. tS
