community. In fact, the general consensus was that the residential colleges did not achieve their purpose or at best had limited success and did little more than provide shelter for students.

Residence Hall Revival
The popularity and construction of residential housing experienced an upsurge near the end of the 19th century due to strong college and university presidents who maintained that housing was central to the collegiate experience. Presidents of the University of Chicago in Illinois, Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and Princeton University in New Jersey all supported housing construction. Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and Princeton built luxurious new Gothic stone halls. Housing construction also increased for two other reasons: the value placed on student housing when private colleges for women were established and students’ desires to be housed closer to campus so they could participate in extracurricular activities such as athletics, debate societies, Greek organizations, and honor societies.

Welcoming Women to Campus
The earlier women’s colleges established between 1840 and 1850 included Wesleyan Female Seminary (Georgia), Knox University (Illinois), Masonic University (Alabama), and Oberlin College (Ohio) as noted in John Thelin’s A History of American Higher Education (2004). Women’s institutions founded in the late 19th century also included Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, New York), Mount Holyoke College (South Hadley, Massachusetts), and Smith College
