For some, that means shifting resources by increasing online course offerings, offering academic programs entirely through distance learning, replacing tenure-track faculty positions with adjunct instructors, and increasing the number of out-of-state students and of evening and weekend classes. At the University of Florida, though, they are shifting the schedule as they devise a novel plan to increase enrollment for the spring and summer terms. This new additional academic year is referred to as Innovation Academy. Innovation Academy is a new enrollment model that operates on a spring/summer calendar. Students take courses on campus during the spring and summer terms instead of the traditional fall and spring terms. The Innovation Academy cohort will follow this spring/ summer on-campus pattern for their entire undergraduate degree program. This plan allows the university to maximize its resources by enrolling more

students in traditionally lesser-enrolled terms. By utilizing additional capacity during the spring and summer terms, class size and student/faculty ratios will not be impacted. Just like all other students, those in Innovation Academy will pursue online courses, study abroad, complete internships, conduct research and community service, and find employment. Although they will have diverse majors and academic interests, they will all take courses and engage in other learning activities to explore dimensions of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship and will graduate with a minor in entrepreneurship and innovation. “Students in Innovation Academy will have a unique shared experience in entrepreneurship and innovation as well as access to the resources of a world-class research university – but with a small college feel,” says Zina Evans, vice president for enrollment management.
