Just in Six-year graduation rate for black attending male studentsuniversities public colleges and compared to 48.1 percent for students overall In a report from the National Black Male College Achievement Study, “Black Male Student Success in Higher Education,” author Shaun Harper highlights some sobering numbers on the lack of success for black male college students. But in the same breath he stresses that there is no reason to dwell on the less than positive statistics: “Instead of adding to the now exhaustive body of literature and conversations about why Black male enrollments and degree attainment rates are so low, this study sought instructive insights from engaged student leaders who did well and maximized their college experiences.” More insights from this report will be offered in a forthcoming book from Harper titled Exceeding Expectations: How Black Male Students Succeed in College.
