A

uthor Robert Kegan, who writes about college residential life in the book In Over Our Heads: The Mental Demands of Modern Life, says that if he were asked to summarize “centuries of wise reflection on what is required of an environment for it to facilitate the growth of its members,” he would say that “people grow best where they continuously experience an ingenious blend of support and challenge; the rest is commentary.”

This describes the model of higher education put forth by Nevitt Sanford, a psychology professor at the University of California at Berkeley, who believes that there should be a balance of support and challenge in student life. If students are challenged too much, they become overstressed and often drop out, but if they are supported too much, their growth will be hindered. During the college years, students must deal with a number of stressors, such as academic challenges, meeting new people, balancing school with work and play, diversity issues, and living with roommates. These challenges can be overcome to some extent by designing spaces that will help reduce stress and create a strong sense of community within residential spaces. Programmatic interventions from residence life professionals can both support and challenge students by offering educational programs, intervening in conflicts, and promoting social interaction. What may not be so apparent is that the building itself can offer a similar balance of support and challenge. For example, something as simple as designing a lounge so that someone can see who is in the space before committing to entering the room could eliminate some of the awkwardness and uncertainty of social interactions. Or something as simple as where an RA room is and whether or not it has a private bathroom can have a profound impact on how RAs engage with their community and how much of a role they can play in the success and failure of borderline students.
