n 2007, virginia Tech’s Blacksburg, campus was an open and free environment. during the day, residence halls remained unlocked. Private spaces were easily accessed from more public gathering spots. at night, card access allowed residents to travel in and out.
to campus environments, and the first thing that comes to mind is technology: security cameras, ID scanners, automatic door locks, and propped door alarms. Yet security is about much more than controlling who comes and goes or installing technological systems. It’s a core consideration on nearly every campus. With an intentional approach to building design and renovation, campuses can take – and are taking – a holistic approach, protecting the physical safety of their residents and actively cultivating a psychological sense of safety for those who live on campus.
Contrast that to this spring, when the Secret Service arrived on campus to prepare for First Lady Michelle Obama’s commencement appearance. “They wanted to shut down all the buildings, just allowing local access to the students who live there,” says Ken Belcher, senior associate director for housing services. “We said, ‘We’ve been doing that for five years now.’” Much has changed in five short years. Not just on the campus of Virginia Tech, but on campuses all across the country – and beyond. Within this new reality, security has become synonymous with limiting access
