“IMAGINE 2025,” that represents a holistic approach to both revitalizing our housing stock and rethinking our residential life priorities and our four-year plan for student growth and learning. The five tenets have been at the core of all our planning since that special day. Community is one of our highest values, and we have found the theme of innovation to be particularly inspiring. We completed a $3.5 million renovation of our largest residence hall (300 beds) in 2010 that focused on lighting, shared space, and the technology tenet-inspired hubs. We have been particularly pleased with these technology hubs, where students can plug into large flat screens to do group projects, practice presentations, watch a movie, or play video games. Our limited budget restricted our ability to address all of our sustainability goals, so we focused on water savings and

are very pleased with our results. We also designed the spaces to be flexible enough to allow us to open four more LLCs if we desired. The main space was transformed from a maze of individual rooms to a large open space that can be used for many different purposes. Gone is the computer lab in favor of a technology hub and shared printers. Gone is the game room in favor of a pool table in an open multipurpose space. Gone is the enclosed lounge, replaced with a sunken space with a large gas fireplace and flat screen that can be used for presentations and programs. Recycled glass bottles were used in the front desk counter, and flatscreen monitors behind the desk help keep students informed. The hall includes four livinglearning communities that are essentially small houses for the residents. We have had first-years to seniors participate in the LLCs, but the

emphasis is on first- and second-year students. Integration is a key element, as we think learning happens when the classes mix, so we eliminated our first-year only halls and now have three large halls that house freshmen and sophomores. We installed “porch” lights outside of each room that come on at quiet hours when the main lights dim. This has provided a neighborhood feel for the residents and a subtle reminder of quiet hours.
