A: We start to accept contracts from new students as early as February, but they do not really start to get assigned until about May, as we handle the returning students first. Students are permitted to request a roommate of their own choosing or new incoming freshmen can participate in our Roommate Match program if they so desire. We house about 1,800 new freshmen. First-year students are required to live on campus unless they are commuting from their parents’ permanent address. All told, we house about 70 percent of the freshman class. We are on the semester system. Colleen Tompkins Assistant Director, Residence Life Eastern Michigan University A: Here’s what we’ve got at Ryerson University. We assign new students in late June. They are assigned to a building, room, and bed at this time, but they only receive information about their building and room style. They find out their room and bed number when they move in. Students cannot select their own room, but they are able to request a roommate. If they are both offered in the first round of offers (late June), then we will place them together. We house 851 students in total. Approximately 775 to 800 of these students are in their first year. We do not require that first-year students live on campus. We are on a semester system. Jenny Owens Residence Assignments & Marketing Coordinator, Student Housing Services Ryerson University A: Here at Marquette University, we assign new students during the first week of June, just before our summer preview sessions (summer orientation). They can state a preference for roommates and room types but not specific rooms. Returning students can select specific rooms and roommates through our online process (using RMS). We have a two-year on-campus requirement and house about 94 percent of our incoming students each year (1,941 this year). We are on semesters. Sean Berthold Assistant Dean for Housing Services Marquette University A: We begin accepting applications for new students at the beginning of February, and then we begin assigning them in May or June. We do not allow new students to self-assign at this point, although we may look to it in the future. We currently house approximately 1,100 first-year students on campus.
