Dates You Need to Know
Mark your calendars, and stay on top of all the latest happenings. Information on these and all other ACUHO-I initiatives is online at www.acuho-i.org. Call for Programs: 2013 ACUHO-I Annual Conference and Exposition Now is the time to start thinking about giving back to the profession and to commit to presenting at the 2013 annual conference and exposition. The call for programs is currently open and will close November 26. To be held June 15-18 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the 2013 annual conference will feature some program changes. Presenters can choose a 45- or 60-minute session length, whichever fits the topic best. Roundtables will now be scheduled for an hour. The Relay sessions, which allow a group of presenters to share a time slot so that attendees can get a quick look at different points of view on a single subject, were a hit at the 2012 conference, so they’ll reappear in 2013. The Placement Exchange This event will be held March 13-17, 2013, in Orlando, Florida. James C. Grimm National Housing Training Institute: Interested participants in the 2013 event are encouraged to submit their applications now. The event, held June 4-8 at the University of Georgia, is geared toward professionals with three to five years of experience. ACUHO-I Housing Internship Program: The application deadline for both hosts and interns is January 7, 2013. Host sites can begin to contact potential interns on January 18 at noon (Eastern), interviews will begin on January 22, and offers can be made on February 18 at noon.

Leaders Unite
ACUHO-I Executive Director Sallie Traxler and ACUHO-I President Vennie Gore attended the Global Summit on Student Affairs and Services in Washington, D.C., September 20-21, 2012. Sponsored by Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) and the International Association of Student Affairs and Services (IASAS), this event brought together student affairs professionals representing national and multinational associations from more than 20 countries. Four overarching themes came out of the two-day discussions: (1) Student affairs has a critical role to play in responding to students as they enter higher education. (2) Student affairs has a critical role to play in responding to students as they engage in the process of higher education (during their enrollment). (3) Student affairs has a critical role to play in responding to students as they exit higher education. (4) Student affairs is expanding globally as a field in higher education. Attendees concluded the meeting by setting up a framework that will allow them to continue working on the four identified themes. The group has committed to maintaining a network of practitioners and to planning when and where they will meet to continue their discussion. They also committed to further research key points of information that will move their work forward, such as identifying traits that will enable students to succeed in a global context. Additionally, they committed to reaching out to academic partners and bringing them on board with forwarding this mission. “It was time well spent listening to our global colleagues and thinking about how differently we approach serving students, yet how similar our passions and goals are when it comes to their success,” says Traxler.

Data at Your Fingertips
In March of 2010, ACUHO-I became a partner in the NASPA Consortium, giving the association, and by extension its members, access to benchmarking data gathered through surveys administered by Campus Labs. ACUHO-I members Tony Cawthon, Alan Blattner, John Buck, Lisa Diekow, Leasa Evinger, Mark Hudson, David McKelfresh, Frankie Minor, and Julie Payne-Kirchmeier developed the ACUHO-I Campus Housing Operational Survey with the assistance of Kim Vanderlinden of Campus Labs (then Student Voice). It replaces the Association Institutional Database, a previous survey of the ACUHO-I membership. The survey was administered November 16, 2011, through March 16, 2012, and was made up of 11 sections: General Information (demographics); Occupancy Management and PublicPrivate Partnerships; Facilities/Services/Amenities; Programming; Personnel; Technology-Hardware and Software; Finances/Budget/Fees; Emergency Preparedness and Security; Environmental Sustainability Initiatives; Strategic Planning and Assessment; and Departmental Processes and Policies. ACUHO-I’s goal is to create a repository of useful data for its membership and for association purposes. The survey will be repeated every other year and eventually results will be comparable across a span of years. Details about how to access this information will be announced in the coming months.
