ost of us remember how tough it was picking a college. It had to suit our personalities, provide the resources for our chosen course of study, and fit our budget. The investment in those four years would pay back for a lifetime, or so we hoped. It’s not so different when a campus decides it’s time for a new or renovated residence hall. Not only is it a significant financial investment, but it must fit the campus, suit its students, and help those students achieve personal and career goals. It needs to return on the investment for generations. Arizona State’s former University Architect Ron McCoy once told The Chronicle of Higher Education, “My job is basically figuring out how to manifest the values of the president and the university in the physical environment.” Note that he says nothing about bricks, beds, or bathroom fixtures. That is because the design process is as much about ideas, goals, and aspirations as it is about physical space. The strategic goals of a residential project can be about attracting and retaining students or enhancing the institution’s reputation. Strategic outcomes can include teaching and learning; integrating knowledge, diversity, and inclusion; preparing students to be part of a global community; and creating a sustainable community. Of course there are tested metrics about particular project types, but for a
