Beef up your budget knowledge and learn how to explain the story of student housing.

hey’re just numbers. Right? When it comes down to it, they’re just numbers on a page, so what can be so complex about budgets? A great many things. If there is one topic that is prevalent at every mid-level conference or institute, it is budgets. Everyone in student housing faces the challenge of budget development and financial management, an area that becomes more complex at each higher position in the field. Academic and business decisions have become more interwoven, and more college and university presidents are coming from the business and financial side of the higher education house, according to the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO). Higher education is being seen more than ever as a business, a trend that may not go away any time soon. How are we preparing ourselves and our colleagues to handle this challenging topic in college and university housing? Many housing professionals want to answer this question so they can develop their expertise in the area, becoming more effective in their current roles and perhaps even advancing to the next level.
Ask Questions and Seek Expertise
As housing professionals are starting to dig into this topic, a key point must be mentioned – every institution is different. Some housing offices operate as auxiliaries, others receive some institution funding, and others are a mix of both. What is true for you and your office will have a great impact on how you interpret the budgets with which you work most directly.
