“understand more about Islam.” Yale and IIT are both private institutions with offices devoted specifically to religious services. Some institutions, especially public ones, must take different approaches to supporting religious groups. Arizona State University (ASU) in Phoenix is also taking part in the President’s Challenge. Rather than having a multicultural affairs office or an office of diversity, ASU has the Office of Institutional Inclusion and a comprehensive Diversity Plan embodied in a 12-page document outlining the institution’s stance on diversity. The Office of Institutional Inclusion has many different initiatives: the Diversity Scholars Series, Faculty Cross Talks, University Dialogue Series, and the Women’s Collaborative Partners. In addition, the Interfaith Dialogue event was presented in

November of 2011 to support the President’s Challenge. Paul Eppinger, executive director for Arizona’s Interfaith Movement, was the keynote speaker for the event. Each table had one facilitator, who encouraged and continued dialogue throughout the dinner. Event staff were careful to ensure that the tables were a mix of students, staff, and faculty so that thoughtful discussions among those of different backgrounds could take place. According to Kendra Hunter, director of residential services, her department advocates this vision of “inclusivity for all.” Housing departments at schools like ASU can support their Muslim student population without the intensive involvement of schools like Yale or IIT. They can inform students about the option for religious accommodations or about dining options, and they

can conduct programs that support religious groups. With the number of Muslim students continuing to increase at higher education institutions across the country, it’s important to sit down as a department and decide how to support their community. Perhaps then housing professionals can help students like Sameer, Muhammad, and Nesima feel that their peers understand and respect their religion and that they are supported by their housing department as members of an inclusive community in their home away from home. tS
