American University of Afghanistan
Kabul, Afghanistan Primary Contacts: Qudratullah Madady, assistant director of student affairs, residence life, and campus programming; and Karla A. Fraser, student development specialist/ residence life consultant American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) rents traditional guesthouses that were initially built as private homes for large, extended families and, with minor renovations, converts them into suitable residential living spaces. AUAF now rents five buildings from local, private homeowners. The buildings are gender segregated, which is required to fit into Islamic culture, and for safety and security reasons, all the residence hall buildings are surrounded by 10-foot walls and monitored by security staff 24/7. The security staff is composed of both unarmed and armed guards. The converted guesthouses can accommodate, on average, 40 residents by hosting two to four students per room. Rooms in the guesthouses vary in size and style based on the layout of each particular house. The rooms are all fully furnished. Residents share a semi-private bathroom or community bathroom. Each building has a fully equipped, shared kitchen and a laundry area which all the residents share. Each building has a common space that features some fitness equipment, a pool table, ping pong table, a large flat-screen T.V., DVD player, and video gaming system. All buildings have a full-time house cleaner who cleans all of the common areas. Maintenance for the facilities is a joint effort between the university and the building owner. Each group of buildings is managed by a full-time residence hall coordinator (RHC) and resident assistants. The staff help residents with both personal and academic issues and plan and promote mainly social activities and events. There are plans to expand both the scope and quantity of the programs offered within the halls.
