that thought in mind, two campus housing professionals – Deb SchmidtRogers (director of residential education at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois) and Scott Boden (associate director of residence life at The Ohio State University in Columbus) – were asked to review the book. Then a dialogue was opened between them and one of the book’s editors – Jill Smith, a former high school teacher and Gay-Straight-Alliance advisor and current instructor in Ohio State’s Middle Childhood Education Department. The following captures some of the major points that grew from their conversations.
on How tHe book is appliCable to a Campus setting:
Boden: Obviously, this book is written from a pre-college perspective. But what
I love about it is that the suggestions and the perspectives can be so helpful for our work with college students. In some senses, it’s interesting to learn how high school teachers perceive their students as it helps us learn what their learning style is like one year later when they enter college. We talked about factors that might restrict how the subject is handled. For teachers, school structures don’t always allow for an in-depth discussion or study of this topic due to the influence of the board of education, parental involvement, if the teacher has tenure, etc. At the same time we considered how, a [public] institution like Ohio State might teach around this topic very differently than perhaps one like [private, faith-based] Ohio Dominican. Schmidt-Rogers: I looked for what new techniques I could take away from the
book and incorporate into my work. In doing so I wondered how those techniques and inquiries differ because I work at a faith-based (Roman Catholic) institution. What implication does the book and its various recommendations have for our work in rural, urban, suburban, etc. campuses? Does it matter? Does it change how we do our work and tell our stories? Smith: When working with college students, we need to set standards for the way students treat one another to be as explicit and high as we are with our academic standards. There is always a focus on emotional safety in school when kids are young, but we tend to forget its importance as they get older. Boden: I think that this book would
