Such is the case of the Global Village Living-Learning Center at Indiana University or, more specifically, its Books & Beyond International Service Project. Books & Beyond is a cross-cultural literacy exchange that combines the efforts of Indiana students, TEAM charter schools located in Newark, New Jersey, and the Kabwende Primary Center in Kinigi, Rwanda, to produce a collection of stories that is turned into a book each year. Recognizing the need for a service project that would help residents connect to the campus and become engaged in educationally productive ways, Books & Beyond was created as part of the mission to meet the linguistic, cultural, academic, and professional needs of its residents. The successes and challenges of Books & Beyond, now in its fifth year, suggest some best practices for organizing a complex, international service-learning partnership in a residential program. Affiliated with the Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences, the Global Village is one of several learning communities on its Bloomington campus. The Global Village attracts students who are interested in international studies and foreign languages, regardless of their majors.

These students are the polyglots of the future. The focus on international interests goes beyond the traditional language house, where students share a residence for the purpose of practicing a common foreign language together. Although Indiana offers classes in more than 80 languages, traditional language houses have not been popular on campus because students frequently study more than one language, sometimes up to four or five at once, and do not want to be limited to one. The Global Village offers formal and informal learning opportunities throughout the academic year, including the introductory “Q” course taught by peer instructors, which invites students to consider the political, social, cultural, and economic dimensions of globalization and their roles in it. Still, there was consideration of what else could be done to put the students’ skills to greater use. Jeff Holdeman and Lauren Caldarera, administrators at the Global Village, sought to develop a multi-year project that would support the center’s mission, expand its role as a thematic community, and meet the various linguistic, cultural, academic, and professional needs of its residents. The result was Books & Beyond,
