the School of Journalism, and the Office of Mentoring, among others. They made as many connections as possible, approaching other university units, community partners, and the parents of Global Village students to find support and resources. In addition to Books & Beyond’s tripod partnership, the IU School of Education, the Academic Initiatives & Services of Residential Programs and Services, non-Global Village students, and alumni have made essential contributions to the success of Books & Beyond. Other university units have also contributed resources and support. Beth Samuelson, a new faculty member in the Department of Literacy, Culture and Language Education in the IU School of Education, joined Books & Beyond because of her prior research experience in Rwanda and her interest in English learners. Her success in obtaining internal funding made the 2009 inaugural trip to Rwanda possible and supported an undergraduate intern and a graduate research assistant. She has been involved in the project both as a faculty advisor (2008-11) and as an advisory board member (2012-13). Some of the roles she has played have included helping writers develop stories that are accessible to Rwandan English learners, developing curricular materials to go with the books, coaching the Evaluation Team, and assisting with development of the credit-bearing summer leadership development course. Other faculty and students have gotten involved through curricular service-learning courses, internships, and research assistantships. MBA students from the Kelley School of Business developed a fundraising development guide, which outlines short- and longterm fundraising objectives for Books & Beyond. A fine arts class reviewed promotional brochures and redesigned the Books & Beyond logo. Graduate students in public affairs and education have completed research internships with the project, training Writing Partners, working with the Evaluation

Team, and contributing to teacher guides to accompany the storybooks. Diana Jacobs has been a critical administrative partner as director of the Office of Academic Initiatigs and Services (AIS), a division of Residential Programs and Services, ensuring that AIS provided funding for Books & Beyond. AIS supports the academic mission of the university through a variety of academic services in the residential halls, including advising, tutoring sessions, residential classes, libraries, volunteer programs for faculty

and staff, living-learning centers, and thematic and academic residential learning communities. As a former IU student, Nancy Uslan was instrumental in making the connections between the Global Village and the other partners, TEAM charter schools and Kabwende Primary Center. In 2008, she met Clement Nkuriyingoma, the headmaster of Kabwende Primary Center, on a trip to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National
