New Roommate Classification Model Proposed
Lisa K. Hanasono, an assistant professor of communication at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and Lawrence B. Nadler, a professor of communication at Miami University in Ohio, recently had a study published in The Journal of College Student Development (volume 53, number 5) that focuses on using the concept of interactional dialectics to measure satisfaction between different types of roommates. The paper proposes a model of student classification that addresses the different complexities arising as a result of the proximity and stresses unique to the residence hall environment. In the study, students are classified as Conventionals (high levels of friendship), Functionals (“economic and pragmatic”), or Separates (high levels of independence from one another). Using an online questionnaire, the study revealed that student pairs of the same classification displayed the highest levels of satisfaction as opposed to mixes of the types. The study can be found at http://muse. jhu.edu/journals/journal_of_college_student_development/ v053/53.5.hanasono.html.

Research Funds Available from AIR Race Relations Examined by UIUC Professionals
A recent study published in the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education (volume 5, number 3) by a group of professionals at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign examined the experience of non-white students at a predominantly white university. The researchers classified 70 different examples of racial microaggression and organized them using a previously existing taxonomy into four categories: racial jokes/ comments, written slurs, physical segregation/unequal treatment, and “denial and minimization of racism.” The study examines the effects of these microaggressions on non-white students’ perceptions and attitudes regarding the residence halls. The final recommendations include re-evaluation of residence life’s educational purpose, additional staff training, and constant vigilance regarding outsiders’ perception of the residence halls. This study can be found at http://psycnet.apa.org/ journals/dhe/5/3/159/. The Association for Institutional Research (AIR) recently announced that they have federal funding available for faculty, researchers, and doctoral students interested in studying the impact of data in the college search and selection process. Grants up to $40,000 are available for faculty and researchers, and grants up to $20,000 are available for doctoral students. More information is available on AIR’s website at https://www.airweb.org/GrantsAndScholarships/Pages/GrantProgramOverview.aspx or assistance is available from AIR grant staff at grants@airweb.org or 850-385-4155 x 200. The deadline for proposals is January 10, 2013.

12-Step Addiction Program Benefits young Adults
Finding support while recovering from addiction can be extremely difficult on a college campus, where alcohol and drug abuse can be a prominent problem. According to a study in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence (in press), attending a local Twelve-Step program used by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) can be one of the most cost-effective venues for recovery support. More than 300 adults, ages 18 to 24, participated in the study and the Twelve-Step program, and the results revealed that more attendance related to an increased number of days of abstinence. Consistent and active involvement in the group was strongly related to more beneficial outcomes in recovery. The study was conducted by the Massachusetts General HospitalHarvard Center for Addiction Medicine and the Butler Center for Research at Hazelden in Center City, Minnesota. The study can be found at http://www. sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0376871612004000.
