to feel about issues. Smith: As an ally I’m uncomfortable with the “placeholder” label because it feels a little like I’m speaking on behalf of experiences I haven’t had. Or that, somehow, ally voices and LGBTQ voices are interchangeable. Ally, like any identity, entails a range of things and is going to look different from person to person. Maybe we can name allies as activists whose work is deeply contextual? For some reason, this also makes me think we should add that the freedom to speak up or not is part of the privileged identities of allies and feels like an important difference between allies and LGBTQ individuals. Too often when people see one or two out gay people they point to them as evidence of equality and safety, which isn’t necessarily the case. If someone is out, but under constant pressure to be the

spokesperson for all things gay, that’s not a safe space.

Boden: I was struck by the perspective on community and in particular the concept of an “activist community” [described in the book as a student group that acts as both community and a vehicle engaged in action for change]. I thought the examination had such a direct parallel for our work with our residential communities. I’m not sure many teachers would consider themselves “activists.” Schmidt-Rogers: I found myself asking how do I continue being a safe space for all our student residents while clearly advocating on behalf of LGBTQA students on my campus?
